The National Association of Plastic Industries (Anipac) regrets that the Mexico City Congress has not taken into account the sector's proposals for the preparation and approval of the reform to the Solid Waste Law of the Federal District, a decision that will affect the economy of the capital and its inhabitants, not just the industry.
Anipac has repeatedly sought approaches with different actors of the capital government to make available technical studies and alternatives to the current situation regarding the mismanagement of urban solid waste, with the commitment of all actors, without having echo to collaborate. Altogether, "this is why we disapprove of the fact that only the position of some civil society organizations has been heard, giving the ban on plastics as a solution," said the Association.

«We consider that talking about compostable and/or biodegradable products without having an infrastructure for their management is risky, since compostable plastics do not immediately integrate into nature, nor do biodegradable plastics disintegrate spontaneously, they are required of specific conditions for its management, so it is considered an alternative but not the only one as indicated in the approved reform," said Anipac.
Likewise, the legal modification can be perfected since it does not pose commitments on the part of the local government regarding the separation and use of waste, there is a lack of promotion of citizen awareness campaigns for the correct use of plastics, environmental education in schools and promotion of the circular economy.
«However, today more than ever, at Anipac we are committed to doing everything within our scope to face environmental challenges and at all times we will be willing to support the authorities.
«We highlight that 97% of the bags are reused to store garbage in homes; that of the total extraction of oil, 4% is used for the manufacture of plastics; while of the total municipal solid waste, straws represent only 0.05%," the document says.
